Gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to words and phrases so that they can be interpreted as a code or a hidden message. It is an ancient form of numerology in which each letter of the alphabet is assigned a numerical value ranging from one to nine. This system is most commonly used in Kabbalah, Judaism, and Christianity, but has also been employed for numerology, divination, and magical practices.
The term "gematria" comes from the Greek word for "geometry", and its origin can be traced back to ancient Babylonian practices. It was popularized in Jewish mysticism during the Middle Ages, where it was used to interpret hidden meanings in scriptures. Numerical values were assigned to Hebrew letters, allowing scholars to interpret their meanings through associating words with different numeric values. For example, words containing the same numeric value can have similar associations but with different literal meanings such as "guard" and "hand" both being equal to three.

Calculating gematria values involves addition against an established set of conventions. For instance each primordial letter (אבגד...) has a value of 1 which reflects its primordial meaning; successive letters add an additional unit of 10 (כלמנ..). This semantically ties greater numbers together into larger concepts that can represent something deeper behind words or written works than just semantics alone.
